About this resource

This resource centres on the health, wellbeing, safety knowledge and physical activity skills that are explored in Series 3 of Kangaroo Beach. Supporting Foundation to Year 2, it explores how to keep students and their peers safe and healthy in and near water.
Lessons are aligned to the three sub-strands Australian Curriculum’s Health and Physical Education learning area, with a particular focus on the movement and physical activity strand. Activities have been intentionally designed to address the curriculum focus on active play and minor games, challenge and adventure activities, rhythmic and expressive activities, and fundamental movement skills.
Each lesson also addresses the competency standards from the Australian Water Safety Council’s National Benchmarks for Swimming and Water Safety Education.
Getting started
This resource includes 5 lessons, each aligned with a particular episode of Kangaroo Beach Series 3.
Each lesson is sub-divided into a menu of engaging tasks which can be used flexibly. They work when delivered consecutively as a learning sequence or as standalone lessons. They include a mix of individual, group and partner-based exercises.
Tasks cover curriculum expectations across the breadth of Foundation to Year 2, with suggestions for differentiation and adaptation where appropriate.
Dryland physical activities that can be used to build the swimming and water safety skills presented in the episode are included and the connections between the two are made clear for students in the explanations.
Each lesson has:
- A Kangaroo Beach episode or clip as the ‘hook’
- A learning intention in student-friendly language
- 3 or 4 suggested learning tasks; each task matched to shorter clips from the episode
- A task intentionally designed to further the development of a fundamental movement skill, themed to the familiar and loved characters of the series
- A paper-based/worksheet task
- Links to the Australian Curriculum
- Links the Fundamental and Acquisition stages of the National Water Safety Benchmarks, as reflected in the episode
