About ACTF Education

The ACTF is passionate about building screen media literacy in young people; helping them think critically, create confidently and navigate our complex media world with curiosity and courage.

Australian screen stories breathe energy and meaning into learning. They spark joy and connection that goes far beyond entertainment. When students see their own voices, communities and landscapes reflected on screen, it transforms learning into something personal and relevant. These stories also challenge assumptions and open doors to empathy and inclusion. They make lessons come alive, connecting curriculum to culture in ways that matter.

Media literacy is about understanding and shaping the stories that surround us as critical consumers and thoughtful creators. In an age of misinformation, where traditional and trusted information sources are no longer the primary way we access and absorb information, screen media literacy has never been more important. It equips students with the skills to think critically, recognise how values and lived experiences shape beliefs, and navigate a world of competing perspectives.

Just as importantly, media literacy opens the door to creativity. Students do not simply consume content, they learn to create it, using digital tools to share their perspectives and contribute to the the stories we see on screen. In doing so, they become active participants, confident in their ability to engage thoughtfully and imaginatively with the world of screens.

“I use Australian content and stories in my teaching because they reflect the voices, experiences and cultures of the students in my classroom. It’s important that young people see themselves represented in the media they consume and create. I regularly use resources from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation because they offer rich, high-quality content made by Australian kids, for Australian kids. These stories are relatable, diverse and relevant, and they help spark meaningful conversations about identity, place, and community in a way that international content often (and usually!) doesn’t.”
