Using screen texts to teach civics and citizenship in the secondary classroom
Film and television provide powerful entry points into big questions about democracy, justice, identity and community. This professional learning session explores how secondary teachers can use Australian screen stories to deepen students’ civics and citizenship understanding, while sharpening their media literacy and critical and creative thinking skills.
In this session, students will :
- Unpack curriculum-aligned strategies and age-appropriate resources
- Explore media literacy and critical thinking approaches to developing civics and citizenship knowledge and skills using short screen texts
- Access classroom-ready activities that connect civics concepts with contemporary screen texts
Ideal for secondary teachers wanting to engage students with authentic, relevant learning experiences.
This session will be delivered in collaboration with the Civics and Citizenship: Curated Clip Collection writer Keith Heggart.
